Cantwell leads field of Shot Put all-stars in Nordhausen

Nordhausen, GermanyVirtually the entire world men’s Shot Put elite will gather for the 10th edition of the International Nordhäuser Energie Shot Put meeting in Nordhausen, Germany, on 22 January.

Christian Cantwell of the US, the reigning World champion indoors and outdoors, will return to defend his title here. Last year, he defeated his compatriot Reese Hoffa, whom he succeeded as World champion, with a 21.47m effort. It was the first of 18 competitions for Cantwell in 2009, of which he won a dozen. His toss in Nordhausen was the farthest in the world of the indoor season.

Cantwell will take on fellow countryman Adam Nelson, a former World champion and two-time Olympic silver medallist.

The American duo will face the top German putter, World bronze medallist Ralf Bartels, also the reigning European champion. Canada’s Dylan Armstrong will also be in the field.

Local eyes will focus particular attention on David Storl, the 2007 World youth champion, and World junior champion in 2008. last season, Storl, who will celebrate his 20th birthday in July, reached 22.73m with the 6kg shot, a World junior record. Storl has already reached 20.43m with the senior implement outdoors, also last year, and this season has thrown 20.40m indoors. Storl will be making his second appearance here in the senior competition.

In the women’s field, Germany’s Nadine Kleinert, the World silver medallist, will take on her compatriots Denise Hinrichs and Christina Schwanitz. Italy’s Chiara Rosa. Kleinert, 34, claimed her third World championships silver medal last year and improved her career best to 20.20m in the Berlin final. Her 19.64m personal best indoors came at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow, where she also silver.
