Dwain Chambers showed why he is favourite to lift the European Indoors 60metres gold medal in March with a superb display of sprinting at the Birmingham Games, in Birmingham, UK on Saturday (31).

Chambers produced three quality races at the National Indoor Arena, clocked 6.59 sec in his heat, 6.52 in the semi-finals and then 6.54 to win the final at the low key midlands event.

His semi-final time was the second quickest in the world this year - just 0.01 slower than American Mike Rodgers in the Millrose Games on Friday night  (30 Jan) - while 6.54 in the final equalled the time which won him World Indoor silver in Valencia last year.

“I had a point to prove and I think I did that today,” said Chambers, highlighting why he is the likeliest sprinter to come up trumps at the Euro Championships from March 6-8.

The 30-year-old Londoner setting himself an additional task there, said: "My goal is to win gold in Turin and I think I'm in shape to break the British record too."

That mark belonging to former World and European champion Jason Gardener, currently stands at 6.46sec.
