Luwero, UgandaNancy Chebet, 15, was one of the standout names at a one day Ugandan track and field meeting last weekend (8) to aid qualification of youth athletes for this year’s 5th IAAF World Youth Championships that will take place in Ostrava, Czech Republic on 11-15 July**.

Women

Running in the girls’ 3000m the Kapchorwa native Chebet saw off stiff competition from Ndejje University’s Mildred Chebosis and 14-year-old Budo junior school’s Milly Natabi, winning in 10:07.7.

After 5 laps, pole position was being contested by Chebet and Natabi but the former escaped from her opponent on the last lap to win comfortably, with Natabi crossing in a distant second with 10:26.5.

“It is a motivation for me as I bid to qualify for my first major inrternational competition (Ostrava). It was a tricky race but I managed to beat my opponents,” said Chebet.

Catharine Webombesa, 24, who competed in the 1999 World Youths dominated the middle distance events of the day with a clean sweep in the 800m (2:14.8) and 1500m (4:32.1).

Men

2005 World Youths 400m 6th placer Samuel Egadu, who will turn 19 in June, clocked an impressive 47.5 to win the 400m race ahead of Waiswa Lukungu who finished with 48.4. Egadu didn’t start the race well but took charge on the last stretch to out sprint Lukungu.

There was a good performance by a Ostrava hopeful in the men’s middle distance events. In the 1500m, Gombe S.S student Yuda Chesira, 16, won his heat with 3:49.7, beating twice Olympian Paskal Owor who clocked 3:53.9.

Reigning Ugandan sprint champion Stephen Odwar took easy victories in 100m (10.5) and 200m (21.5).

Standard High School athlete Abraham Kiplimo clocked 14:23.7 to win the 5000m final.
