The 2005 World Cross Country championship short course silver winner Abraham Chebii displayed a serious venture into road running by winning this year's edition of the Discovery Kenya Half Marathon in Eldoret on Sunday (30).

Chebii, 31, clocked 1:02:59 to handily outdistance runner-up Vincent Kipruto (1:03:10) by 11 seconds, along with a field of more than 500. Considering Eldoret's altitude, ranging from 2100 to 2400m above sea level, his performance is certainly noteworthy.

"I enjoyed by debut half marathon although it was too windy," said Chebii, after wining the race held in streets of this town that boasts of a high population of athletes. "I look forward to the day I will run a full marathon in the future."

Apart from being a standout on the track - his credentials include a half dozen sub-13 minute performances over 5000m - Chebii was a consistent member of the Kenyan World Cross Country team between 2000 and 2005 taking part in the then short course event.

But Chebii added that he was not yet done with Cross Country running, saying he would be seeking to make the national team to Punta Umbria at the Kenyan trials in February.

Chebii took control of the race in the fourth lap when he went into the lead and gained a commanding 100 metre advantage that remained unchallenged to the end.
