19yearold Germán Chiaraviglio produced another outstanding performance this weekend (29-30 April) at the 86th edition of the Argentinean National Championships, which took place in Santa Fe.

On Saturday (29), the 2003 IAAF World Youth Champion vaulted to 5.65m to improve his own national and South American Junior records*, and also to place eight in the all-time juniors’ list.

Chiaraviglio, born in Santa Fe on 16 April 1987 and coached by his father Guillermo, had the following sequence: 5.10m (first attempt clearance), 5.30m (second), 5.45m (third), 5.56m (second), 5.65m (third). His previous record was 5.55m, and was set in Santa Fe on 4 September 2005. After 5.65m he attempted 5.71m but recorded three misses.

“I felt much better than in the previous weekends (at the meets of Santa Fe and Mar del Plata), and I thought I could be close to 5.50m or 5.55m. The weather was fine, even though we had some rain, therefore the conditions were favorable,” said Chiaraviglio.

“Technically speaking, my best vault was the one at 5.45m, which I cleared by a great margin, but all the final jumps were good,” added the promising Argentinean, who now emerges as one of the candidates in his event for the 2006 World Junior Championships, that will take place in Beijing on 15-20 August.

Another solid performance was the one delivered by Discus thrower Jorge Balliengo. The 28-year-old from Rosario set a mark of 64.41m, his third-best effort ever, only two weeks after delivering an Area record of 66.32m in his hometown.

Balliengo, who’s still suffering some discomfort in his left abductor, only took his first three attempts, with the 64.41m coming on his first.

“I was going to take a few throws, and I’m happy I had a good one on my first. That’s the goal at international competitions in order to advance to a final in a major event. Now I have to recover my abductor fully for the upcoming Ibero-American Championships.” said Balliengo.

Shot-putter Germán Lauro, from Trenque Lauquen, won his event with a championship record of 18.66m. That mark placed him second in the all-time national lists, behind the oldest Argentinean record of 18.73m, set by Juan Adolfo Turri in Rio de Janeiro, on 6 September 1975.
