Cuneyt Koryurek passes away

It is with deep regret that the IAAF has learnt of the passing of Cuneyt Koryurek, sports journalist and former President of the Turkish Athletic Federation. Koryurek was hit by a car when crossing a street after he left his office on Saturday, 19 January, and lost his life shortly after he was hospitalized.

Cuneyt Koryurek made a huge contribution to Turkish athletics at various levels for nearly half a century. He served as the General Secretary and the Vice-President of the Turkish Athletic Federation before he held office as President from 1982 to 1984. He was one of the founders of the Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon, which he later served as the Race Director.

Koryurek had been to seven Olympic Games, six times as a journalist and once as the Head of Delegation of the Turkish athletics team. Besides writing articles on athletics for newspapers, he was also commentating on TV at major athletics events.

Cuneyt Koryurek, who had devoted much of his life to promoting athletics, was 77 years old.
