Kladno, Czech RepublicThe national championships were held over last weekend (2 / 3 July) in Kladno, for the first time ever, and were attended by more than 8000 spectators on both days.

Although some big names did not compete because of different reasons (Zelezny travelled to IOC session in Singapore; Sebrle has already started his Helsinki preparation; small injuries for Muzik and Kasparkova etc.) there was enough good quality action.

Women’s Discus Throw world leader Vera Pospisilova-Cechlova threw a very respectable 65.35m on her last effort to win.

“I really had difficulties to find the right motivation. Before the last throw I said to myself, do one very good throw for all the people and I did it. Now the time of preparation for Helsinki is coming, no more competitions,” she explained.

High jumper Jaroslav Baba, although he had only traveled back from Paris on Saturday, won the national title with 2.28 but failed at 2.33m.

“I did not felt anything, I think my shape is growing. I will try to do my best in Rome and attack the position of Stefan Holm,“ Baba commented.

In the women’s Long Jump, Martina Darmovzalova leapt to a PB of 6.66m, which stands third place on the Czech all-time lists and makes her a Helsinki participant for the moment. Without an A-standard (6.75) only the best can travel and that for the moment is Darmovzalova, because World Junior champion Denisa Scerbova, the next strongest jumper, has 6.64 from the indoor season. But the team spot is open until 24 July.

Pole Vault record holder Pavla Hamackova, after a long wait while other athletes jumped lower heights, started her competition at 4.10m and then went over 4.30 and unsuccessfully tried 4.52. “There was too much of waiting and I did some mistakes,” she explained. She will compete in Lausanne.

100m Hurdler Lucie Martincova tried to attack the Czech record and clearly won with 13.09, but missed the mark by 0.04s. Also Javelin thrower Barbora Spotakova confirmed her 60m plus shape to take the title easily. High jumper Iva Strakova won her competition with 1.90m.

From the new generation of athletes the best result was made by Michal Uhlik who bettered his personal best from 49.94 to 49.43 at 400m Hurdles. Still to qualify for Helsinki he must run at least 49.20, because Jiri Muzik has already got his sub-49 time. Also Ondrej Danek achieved a new best of 49.85, bettering his time from the Prague Odlozil Memorial by 0.09 s.

Another newcomer 800m runner Jaroslav Ruza pushed the pace and finished second with personal best of 1:47.05 which makes him one of the favourites for the final at European U22 Championships in Germany later this month. He was beaten only by more experienced Michal Sneberger who achieved new championships record of 1:46.94.
