The IAAF High Level Coaching Seminar for "Combined Events" took place in Prague, Czech Republic, 27-30 September 2002 with the assistance of three eminent Czech decathletes Robert Zmelik, Tomas Dvorak and Roman Sebrle.

The Czech Athletic Federation was lucky to have the Olympic, World and European winners (two world record holders) at one table ready to answer (for 2 hours) questions from the seminar participants.

The discussion moderator was Katerina Nekolna (heptathlete, 5996 points), who works as sports commentator in Czech TV.

Kertesz Memorial Throwing Gala

Elsewhere in eastern Europe, Athletics took a nostalgic step back into history, when Hungary’s recently crowned European Discus champion and World Cup winner Robert Fazekas, set a new World best for the ancient Discus with a throw of 30.85 at the Kertesz Memorial Throwing Gala held in Balatongyorok, Hungary on 29 September 2002.

The old record dated from Rudlingen/Switzerland in 1998 set by Michael Mollenbeck of Germany, with a throw of 30.40m.

The present rules for the Discus Throw didn't emerge into international competition until 1908. Greek Style Discus competitions took place at the 1906 ‘interim’ and the official 1908 Olympics, and a ‘Both Hands’ - combined distance - Discus event was held at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Therefore, Fazekas’ throw in his native Hungary evoked memories of such historic names as Finland’s Verner Jarvinen and Armas Taipale and America’s Martin Sheridan, all champions at these now discontinued Discus events.
