Daniela Bartova sets new European pole vault record
Komen may not have reached his objective of a new world record in the 2000m - despite the competition organizers changing the 3000m to a 2000m to give him another shot at Noureddine Morceli's July 1995 mark after failing to make it in Milan on 5 June - but the IAAF Grand Prix  II meet in Bratislava "Slovhaft '98" was not short on performances or excitement.

Daniela Bartova of Czech republic set a new European mark in the pole vault, clearing 4.51 metres, and there were four world best performances for the season.

Russia's Natalya Sadova threw 67.85m in the discus to beat the previous season's best (67.58 by Faumuina) by 0.27 metres and beating reigning world champion, New Zealand's Beatrice Faumuina, who came third with 65.43m. Second place was taken by Anastasia Kelesidou from Greece with 65.87m.

In the 3000 steeplechase, Kenya's Joseph Keter marked 8:08.91, while his countrywoman Jackline Maranga, the early leader of this year's IAA World Cross Challenge, ran an excellent 4:00.81, two seconds better than Gabriela Szabo's 1 June mark in Hengelo.

Mark Crear (USA) looks in excellent early season form setting a time of 13.13 in the 110m hurdles. the time places him between Allen Johnson (USA) who ran 13.12 in the Prefontaine Classic on 31.05 and Britain's Colin Jackson, who set a mark of 13.14 in Chemnitz on 20 May.
