Reigning Commonwealth 20km and 50km Race Walk champion Nathan Deakes of Australia has travelled to Mexico to prepare for the 21st IAAF World Cup Race Walking Cup, Naumburg, Germany (1-2 May 2004).

Deakes, who will led Australia's World Cup challenge in the German town, will take advantage of the excellent facilities in Toluka which are also an attraction for Mexico's top walkers.

Having fought back from series of severe hamstring injuries, Deakes is determined to regain the top form which brought him the Commonwealth golds in Manchester 19 months ago.

"I have been travelling to Toluka for several years for altitude training,'' Deakes said. "It's a difficult training regime, but I am looking forward to it after such a long period of injury."
