Debrecen and Hengelo win bids to stage EAA events

Debrecen (HUN) and Hengelo (NED) were chosen to host the European Athletics Under 23 Championships and European Athletics Junior Championships in 2007 during the second session of the 109th EAA Council meeting.

After hearing presentations from two strong candidates for the 2007 European Athletics Under 23 Championships, the EAA Council voted to award the Championships to Debrecen ahead of Annecy (FRA).

The Championships will be staged at the Debrecen Sportcentrum and almost all teams will be accommodated in three star university accommodation walking distance from the stadium.  Debrecen was the host of the 2001 IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships and will host the IAAF World Road Running Championships in 2006.

There were also two strong bids for the 2007 European Athletics Junior Championships.  Following presentations from the two venues Hengelo was chosen to stage the Championships ahead of Bydgoszcz (POL).

Hengelo will stage the Championships at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium which hosts the annual Thales FBK Games Grand Prix meeting and staged the European Cup of Combined Events in 2004.

The Council also awarded the right to host the 2006 European Cup Winter Throwing to Tel Aviv (ISR) and the right to host the 2006 European Cup 10,000m to Antalya (TUR).
