Aleksey Dmitrik of Russia scored his second consecutive high jump win this week with a 2.30 performance at the 29th Novinárská latka 2010 Meeting in Prague. It came two days after his 2.31 victory in Brno. Ukraine’s Dmytro Demyanyuk finished second, also with 2.30, in a countback.

For two hours, the curiosity presented by thirteen high jumpers exhibiting their craft in the main corridor of the Metropole Center in Prague’s Zlicín district captivated several hundred shoppers who gathered after a cold and snowy day in the Czech capital.

It appeared that Dmitrik would again have Jaroslav Bába as his main rival in a repeat of Brno, as the Czech jumper matched the Russian’s clean slate with his own blemish-free record all the way through 2.25.

But Bába’s strength began to ebb as the result of a cold, and he exited the competition at 2.30 while Dmitrik needed only one attempt.

That was when Demyanyuk stepped in to fill the void. The tall Ukrainian kept pressure on Dmitrik with a third-jump clearance at 2.30 as both jumpers moved to 2.34. There, the Russian showed good potential for the coming weeks with two close but unsuccessful tries as the competition came to an end.

“This is the kind of jumping area I like,” said Dmitrik after the competition. “It’s a hard surface, but that fits well with my approach speed.”  Ghent on 14 February is next on his schedule.

Bába held third at 2.25 with Jamie Nieto fourth at 2.20. The American’s performance, while not one of his more memorable ones, was notable because of the rather ‘uneven playing field’ offered by the facility. Those jumping from the left side were handicapped by a stairwell which limited their runs substantially. In the press conference on Wednesday, Nieto, a left-side jumper, jokingly said he would ask that the elevator next to the stairway be kept open so that he could squeeze out a few more centimetres for his approach.

Hungary’s Oliver Harsányi equaled his indoor personal best of 2.20 in fifth, as Viktor Shapoval of Ukraine, another left-side jumper, ended tied for sixth with Javier Bermejo of Spain, also at 2.20.
