Dr Nebiolo elected honorary president of FIDAL

IAAF President Dr Primo Nebiolo has been elected Honorary President of the Italian athletics federation FIDAL by its Executive Committee. This honour is in recognition of Nebiolo’s achievements in athletics, particularly when he was President of FIDAL between 1969 and 1989 and as President of the IAAF since 1981.

In the period when Nebiolo was President of FIDAL the Italian national team enjoyed particular success thanks to great athletes like Marcello Fiasconaro (world record 1:43.7 for 800m in 1973), Pietro Mennea (world record 19.72 for 200m in 1979 and Olympic 200m gold in 1980), Sara Simeoni (world record 2.01m for High Jump in 1979 and Olympic gold in 1980), Maurizio Damilano (20km walk Olympic Champion in 1984 and World Champion in 1987 and 1991) Gabriella Dorio (1500m Olympic Champion in 1984), Alberto Cova (10,000m World Champion in 1983 and Olympic Champion in 1984), Alessandro Andrei (Olympic shot put champion in 1984), Francesco Panetta (3000m steeplechase World Champion in 1987) and Gelindo Bordin (Marathon Olympic Champion in 1988).
