During the Tahitian Pearl Grand Prix which was held on Saturday 3 October on the exotic island of Tahiti, Heike Drechsler, the former two-time World and Olympic Long Jump champion made the last competition of her distinguished career.

Germany's former quadruple European Long Jump champion won with a leap of 6.49m which was her longest performance and also her first win of the summer.

The 39 year-old Drechsler who has found it hard to return to form following a period of persistent injury, had a career best of 7.63 at altitude in Sestriere, Italy in 1992, with her next longest being 7.48 which she jumped in 1988. She was the inaugural World champion in 1983.

A full career appraisal will be published in the coming days.
