Eagles sets new Commonwealth Hammer record in Canberra

Athletics Australia release

18 February 2001 - Canberra, New South Wales - 20-year-old Bronwyn Eagles produced a Commonwealth record performance in the hammer throw to cap off a great day for the state at the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix - Canberra today.

Eagles sent the hammer out to 68.73m to obliterate her previous personal best set on Friday night and rewrite the Commonwealth and Australian records held by Debbie Sosimenko (NSWIS) at 67.95m.

On a hot day at the AIS Athletics Track and in front of a crowd of 3121, NSW won the Centenary of Federation match against Victoria by 11 points (184-173).

Eagles led by example to win the hammer throw for NSW over New Zealand’s Tasha Williams who set a national record of 65.29m in second place.

Olympic sprinters Patrick Johnson (AIS) and Lauren Hewitt (VIS) took out the sprint double in some slick times in good conditions. Johnson won the 100m in 10.13s with a slightly illegal 2.5 metres/second tailwind over Kevin Braunskill (US) who clocked 10.23s and Matt Shirvington (NSWIS) who was pleased with his 10.25s for this time of season. Another NSW sprinter Troy Davies continued his rise in the ranks with a fast 10.33s for fourth.

Johnson backed up later to win the 200m in 20.64s with New Zealand’s Matthew Coad (NZ) in second in 20.91s and Braunskill in third place on the same time.

Hewitt showed she was returning to her best with a strong 100m win in 11.40 seconds (+1.4) over New Zealand’s Caro Hunt (11.50s) with Sharon Cripps (QAS) in third in 11.51s and Nova Peris-Kneebone (NTIS) in fourth in 11.63s.

In an exciting tussle Benita Willis (AIS) qualified for the World Indoor Championships next month with a fantastic 3000m personal best of 8:51.04. Willis braved the warm conditions to match Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan who won in 8:49.87.

The upset of the day came in the women’s pole vault with WAIS athlete Kym Howe clearing 5.20m in difficult cross winds to edge out Olympic silver medallist Tatiana Grigorieva (SASI) who vaulted 5.10m.

Former Algerian now Australian Youcef Abdi (NSW) showed courage to storm away in the 1500m and win in a personal best of 3:39.51 over Kenya’s Edwin Maranga (3:39.82). Abdi who won the Telstra Athletics Trials in August last year after Craig Mottram and Nick Howarth were disqualified was too strong today for Mottram (VIS) who was third in 3:40.16. Mottram was backing up after his Australian 3000m record on Friday night.

The depth is increasing in Australian men’s 400m sprinting with a strong showing by a number of guys today. Olympic semi-finalist Patrick Dwyer (NSWIS) won the race in 45.81s over training partner Daniel Batman (NSWIS) who clocked a season’s best 46.14s, Anton Booth (QLD) who set a personal best of 46.19s and NSW’s Clinton Hill who also ran a p.b of 46.35s.

Olympic walker Nathan Deakes (AIS) also put in a gutsy showing with a near new Australian record of 38:53.82 in the 10,000m walk. Deakes set a personal best in the hot conditions and was less than 35 seconds away from Dave Smith ‘s record set in 1985.

Australian record holder Kerry Saxby-Junna (AIS) won the battle of the women in the 10,000m walk in 44:49.56 over fellow AIS scholarship holder Jane Saville who opened her 2001 campaign with a time of 47:09.23.

Victorian 21-year-old Sonia Brito continued her great early season form in the 400m hurdles with a barnstorming victory over World Junior champion Jana Pittman (NSWIS). Brito clocked 56.46s while Pittman showed signs she is on her way back with a determined 57.34s.

Kyle Vander Kuyp (AIS) won the 110m hurdles in 13.90s while fellow Canberra resident Stuart Rendell started the day’s action with a win in the hammer throw (73.16m).

Andrew Murphy (NSWIS) continued his dominance of Australian triple jumping with a winning performance of 16.29m (+2.5). Exciting prospect Jacquie Munro (NSWIS) won the 100m hurdles in her fastest time of the season (13.35s) from Olympian Debbi Edwards (13.51s) while Queensland hurdler Blair Young also ran a season’s best of 50.06s in the 400m hurdles to hold off Chris Carroll (AIS).

Louise Sauvage (NSWIS) made the winner’s list once again in the handicapped wheelchair 1500m holding off NSW’s Greg Smith and Paul Nunnari.

In-form vaulter Paul Burgess (WAIS) won the men’s pole vault in the difficult jumping conditions with a performance of 5.50m, while Tamsyn Lewis (VIS) again streeted the field in the women’s 800m in 2:01.97.

The Telstra Athletics Grand Prix Series continues on Thursday 1 March with the Telstra Melbourne Track Classic at Olympic Park.
