Morocco's 1500m World Champion Hicham El Guerrouj and Olympic Champion Nawal El Moutawakel – who is also a member of the IAAF Council and the IOC – have been asked to act as Goodwill Ambassadors to Morocco for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

El Guerrouj, who in addition to his World Championship title owns the World Records in the 1500m and Mile both indoors and outdoors and the 2000m outdoors, is also an ambassador for Morocco’s bid to host the 2006 football World Cup.

The 25-year-old gladly accepted to be associated with UNICEF’s actions in favour of improving the conditions for children in his home country.

El Guerrouj and El Moutawakel are to be officially invested in their ambassadorial functions by the regional director of UNICEF for the Middle East and North Africa, Mr Ibrahima Fall, on 20 November, the tenth anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the International Charter on Children’s Rights.
