26 March 2000 Turin, Italy - Ethiopia's Alemayhu Simeretu won the Turin Marathon on Sunday, outracing four Kenyan runners who rounded out the top five.
Simeretu completed the 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometers) in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 34 seconds, pulling away over from his closest competitors in the final two miles.
Elijah Korir of Kenya finished second with a time of 2:08:59, followed by countrymen Mark Saina, Josephat Rop and Raymond Chemwelo.
Kenya's Florence Barsosio cruised to the women's title with a time of 2:27:58, more than two minutes ahead of her closest competitor. Poland's Aniela Nikiel finished second, running the course through this northern Italian city in 2:30:02. Tedelech Birra, an Ethiopian running her first marathon, finished third.
