The French Athletics Federation announced yesterday the names of the 67 athletes who have been selected to compete at the forthcoming IAAF World Championships in Paris.

European 100m record holder Christine Arron and European 200m champion Muriel Hurtis have been selected for both the 100m and 200m individual events as well as the 4x100m relay in which the French women athletes stand a very good chance for winning a medal.

World leaders Eunice Barber (heptathlon) and Manuela Montebrun (Hammer Throw) are the other leading names of the women’s team. Noteworthy, Eunice Barber has been selected to compete in the Long Jump as well as in the Combined Events and she may well be confronted to Carolina Kluft in both events as the young talented Swede recently jumped 6.86m.

In the men’s team, French record holder Medhi Baala has been selected to compete in both the 800m and the 1500m. European champion at 1500m last year in Munich, Baala has already improved on his 1000m and 1500m French records this season and aims at revenging his poor show in Edmonton’s 1500m final in which he finished a distant last.

Pole vaulter Romain Mesnil who cleared 5.92m at the Rome Golden League meeting and high hurdler Ladji Doucouré who won the European U23 championships with a new personal best of 13.25 (13.23 in the semis) will also have high expectations from these championships.

European 400m Hurdles champion and record holder Stéphane Diagana has been given another two weeks to meet the A qualifying standards.
