The biggest surprise of the Rabat International Meeting, which took place on Saturday, 14 June, in the magnificent Prince Moulay Abdellah sports complex in Rabat, came from Abdelkader Hachlaf in the 3000 metres Steeplechase.

Hachlaf, who was a finalist in Edmonton in 2001 and took the bronze medal at the World Indoors in Birmingham in March, outclassed his opponents Abel Cheruiyot (KEN), and 2001 World silver medallist in the 3000 metres Steeplechase, Ali Ezzine (MAR).

In just his third race at this discipline, Hachlaf completed the course in 8:16.51, ahead of Cheruiyot (8:18.43) and Ezzine (8:19.58).

Kenya's Timothy Kiptanui was a convincing winner of the men's 1500 metres race in 3:34.68, ahead of the past Champion of Africa, Moroccan Youssef Baba.

Two Moroccan National Records fell during the meeting: the women's 3000 metres Steeplechase, won by Chaabi Bouchra in 9:54.43, bettering the previous record of 9:56.84 she had set in Rabat two weeks earlier.

In the women's Hammer Throw, Hayat El Ghazi hurled her implement 60.43 metres to smash her previous record of 59.84 metres.

The meeting was broadcast on Moroccan state television channel one.
