Beatrice Faumuina produced a superb performance of 65.09m in the women’s Discus Throw at the Porritt Classic Grand Prix meeting at Porritt Stadium, Hamilton, New Zealand on Wednesday evening (9 Feb).

Throwing into an ideal cross-head wind Faumuina the reigning double Commonwealth Games gold medallist struck it perfectly in the opening rounds of the competition.

“I'm really excited, it is a nice opener to the season. I now have a top venue at Waitakere at which to train and I have been getting in consistent training,” said Faumuina.

The 1997 World champion leaves this week to attend the IAAF Athletes’ Commission meeting in Monaco, and will return to the Southern Hemisphere for her next competition at the Melbourne – IAAF Grand Prix II – meeting next Thursday (17 Feb). Faumuina will also take part in the Australian and New Zealand championships.

Former World Junior and Youth Shot Put champion Valerie Adams-Vili, 20, narrowly missed another 19 metres performance. Vili's best put was 18.97m which was plenty good enough for the win. She had thrown 19.05m in Dunedin on 17 January. Her personal best and national record is 19.29m (2004).
