Fermin Cacho, the 1992 Olympic Champion at 1500m, and Wilfried Meert, Director of the IAAF Golden League Meeting in Brussels, will be presented with the IAAF Silver Order of Merit at a special ceremony tomorrow evening on the occasion of the 6th IAAF World Calendar Conference.
The IAAF has decided to recognise Cacho as 'The Greatest Spanish Athlete of All time' for his results in major competitions and because of his international reputation as a hard-training athlete who displays great tactical sensibility and determination when competing.
Born on February 16 1969, Cacho has an impressive record in major events. As well as winning Olympic gold in 1992 he took Olympic silver at 1500m in 1996. He also won silver at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart and the 1997 World Championships in Athens, the year he broke the European record for 1500m with 3:28.95.
Cacho was also European 1500m champion in 1994, silver medallist at the World Indoor Championships in 1991 and three times a winner at the European Cup (1994, 1996 and 1997).
A native of Soria, Cacho has won 10 national titles at 1500m, indoors and outdoors, since 1989.
Wilfried Meert, a middle distance runner in his youth, has been Meeting Director of the Memorial Van Damme for 22 years and has worked tirelessly to make the Brussels event a sell-out attraction and a key component of the IAAF’s new Golden League.
Meert, a graduate of modern languages, worked as a sportswriter for 17 years for a major newspaper in Belgium before dedicating himself full-time to athletics.
