Flurry of season bests in Stuttgart Meeting
from Ursula Kaiser

4 February 2001 - Stuttgart, Germany - Six World best marks were set at the International Athletics-Meeting in Stuttgart. The best results: Gabriela Szabo, the Olympic-Champion in 5000 m, won the Mile-race in 4:23.19 min and Million Wolde from Ethopia was the fastest 3000 m runner in 7:37.99 min. Szabo was beating Kutre Dulecha (4:23.33 min) and Wolde was faster than the second Ethiopian, Girma Tola (7:38.48 min).

Seven Olympic Champions participated in the Schleyerhalle in Stuttgart, but only three of them won their events. Besides Szabo and Wolde, Ivan Pedroso was the best athlete in the long jump. With 8.17 m in the last attempt - which is typical for the Cuban - he showed the people that he is the best. Second was Kareem Streete-Thompson (Cayman Islands) with 7.97 m.

Heike Drechsler improved her season‘s best mark to 6.74 m - but the winner from Sydney in the long jump was beaten from the Russian Irina Galkina (6,84 m). Nevertheless she wasn’t very disappointed about the result. "The indoor season is not the most important one. But the winter is very dreary and cheerless, so it’s a good opportunity to set highlights", Drechsler said and laughed.

She aims to jump in the near future 6.80 m and than decide definitely if she will jump at the world indoor championships in Lisbon. "If I have the level to jump about 6.80 m I will go".

Another Olympic Champion was very disappointed with his result. Noah Ngeny came only eighth in the 1500 m race, about three seconds behind the winner, Mehdi Baala from France (3:36.90). For Ngeny it was the first indoor race in his life and he had big problems to run on the track with the tight curves.

A big surprise came for Falk Balzer in the 60 m hurdles. He beat Anier Garcia in 7.55 sec with a hundredth of a second advantage and was happy that he won the third race in the third competition. "Now I try to run under 7.50 secs - for that I need a relaxed race", he said. Anier Garcia was disappointed, but he had an excuse for the defeat. "I just came out of the plane from Cuba and I was a little bit tired and I had heavy legs before the competition".

The best runner in the 400 m was Davian Clarke from Jamaica in 46.29. The women’s race was won by Olesja Zykina from Russia in 52.13.

The European Indoor record holder in the women’s pole vault, Swetlana Feofanova from Russia won again with 4.45 m and made one attempt at a new best mark of 4.59 m - but it was too high for her today.

In the shot put nobody was better than Paolo dal Soglio from Italy. He won with 19.95 m, second was Jimmy Nordin from Sweden (19.48 m).

Anzhela Krawchenko won the 60 m in 7.09 sec and beat Suzanne Jayasinghe from Sri Lanka (7.17). The winner in the men’s race was Christopher William from Jamaica in 6.63 sec.

It’s always a highlight to see the 19-year-old Russian Yuriy Borsakowsky running - in Karlsruhe one week before he set a new season’s best mark , this time he had the race all his own way and won in 1:45.64 min. Winner of the 800 m women’s race was Jelena Afanasayeva in 2:01.28 min.

Two women ran under 8 seconds in the 60 m hurdles: Nicole Ramalalanirina from France (7.95) and Anjanette Kirkland from USA (7.95).

The meeting in Stuttgart showed a lot of surprises early in the season. For the Olympic Champions there is still time to get back to form. But they are not the hunters anymore, now they will be hunted......
