Gebrselassie wins Ethiopian cross country
26 February 2002 – Addis Abeba, Ethiopia – Four-time world champion at 10,000 metres, Haile Gebrselassie, dominated the 19th running of the Janmeda cross country competition at Addis Abeba on Sunday.

Gebrselassie completed the 12 kilometre course in 35 minutes 42 seconds, well ahead of his compatriots Assefa Mezgebu (36:30), silver medalist at 10,000 metres in Edmonton last August, and Habte Jifar (36:32).

Gebrselassie broke away from the pack in the second kilometre and maintained his lead to the finish line. It is not known at present whether Gebrselassie will be included in the Ethiopian squad for the IAAF/Sports Ireland World Cross Country Championships that will take place in Dublin on 23-24 March.
