Nivelles, BelgiumKim Gevaert made an impressive seasonal debut at the Belgian Club Championships in Nivelles on Saturday (10).

First, the European double sprint champion sprinted to 11.05 in the 100m, the second fastest performance of her career. An hour later she easily coasted to a 22.74 victory in the 200m.

Given the fact that these were not competitive races and that the track is not particularly fast either, Gevaert was very happy with the way her competition went.

“I just wanted to run technically sound and smooth,” Gevaert said. “I felt very relaxed and that was what today’s races were all about. Of course, this boosts my confidence for the competitions that are yet to come.”

Gevaert’s coach Rudi Diels was not really surprised about his pupil’s showdown.

“In training Kim already proved that she is conditionally ready to perform on this level. But what she produced today under the circumstances is a classy effort indeed. I would rather have expected her at this level at the IAAF Grand Prix in Hengelo on 24 May 24. She truly is on schedule in her preparation for the Olympic Games.”
