Gillian O'Sullivan sets World 3000m Indoor record

Gillian O'Sullivan set a new Irish, European and World record at the National Indoor Championships at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on Saturday, 15th February. O'Sullivan, from Farranfore Co Kerry won in a time of 11.35.34 breaking the previous World mark (11:40.33), which had been held since January 1999 by Romania’s Claudia Iovan, by nearly five seconds.

O’Sullivan, 26, is coached by Micheal Lane, and set a World 5000m outdoor best last summer (20:02.60) at the National Championships in Dublin (14 July). At the European Championships in Munich the following month, she finished fourth in a national record of 1:28.46 for the 20km walk.

A full-time athlete, O’Sullivan has also worked part-time as a Primary School Teacher.
