Jehue Gordon began his quest for 400m hurdles gold  at this summer’s World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada (19-25 July) by claiming double victories at the Trinidad Tobago Carifta Games trials (13-14 March) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Gordon first won the U-20 110m Hurdles in 14.09 running into a -1.3 wind.  He then took the 400m hurdles in 52.01.The second fastest junior all-time (48.26) got out quickly and was ahead on those on his outside and opened up a gap coming into the home straight. He then cruised to the tape finishing very comfortable.

Gordon first announced his arrival at last summer’s World Championships in Berlin when at just 17 he ran a storming race coming in the homestretch in second place before being edged out of a medal.

The Carifta trials provide the final opportunity for the country’s top juniors (under 17 and under 20) athletes to gain selection to the annual Junior Carifta Games to be hosted in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands from 3-5 April. At the 2009 edition of the Games in St. Lucia Gordon won three gold medals (110m Hurdles 13.86/400m hurdles 50.01/4x400m 3:10:20) and he is going for three more in 2010. Gordon said the trials “Is a dry run to see where I am at before Carifta. I have not started cutting down on the training for Carifta as yet.  From my runs this weekend everything is falling into place. I expect to do well in the Cayman Islands.”

Elton Walcott (2009 World Youth 4th place finisher in the Boys triple Jump) won the B U 20 triple jump in 15.82m 0.06 cm short of the National junior mark (15.88m by Kyron Blaise).
