Great Britain makes preliminary team announcement for Edmonton
David Martin (PA Sport)
17 July 2001 - Showing the unity and self respect existing between the brethren of British sprinters, World Indoor 200 metres silver medallist Christian Malcolm last night made an offer he hopes his mate Darren Campbell will not refuse.

Although eager to double-up in the outdoor championships which begin in less than three weeks time in Canada, Malcolm third in the British 100 metres trial at the weekend wants to see the injured Campbell make the trip.

Malcolm conceded there is no way he will surrender his favoured 200 metres slot for Edmonton even to Campbell who has nurtured him in his transition from the junior to senior ranks.

But everyone's favourite to fill the third and vacant shorter slot which the selectors must nominate by next Monday, Malcolm said: "If it is between me and Darren for the spare 100 metres place in the team, if he is fit I want them to give it to him."

The gesture from Malcolm is probably just what the selectors want to hear. A brilliant rapport existed between all of the athletes in last year's Olympic Games and the team spirited generated in Australia has clearly continued.

Not surprisingly every British medallist from Sydney - including Campbell in the 4x100m relay - has been selected. Although telling athletes they wanted them to beat their event qualifying standards this year, the selectors have accepted performances from last summer, which is acceptable to the International Amateur Athletic Federation.

UK Athletics Performance director Max Jones said: "The team we have selected looks every bit as strong as the one that travelled to Sydney twelve months ago.

"The team ranges from our six Olympic medallists down to promising newcomers hoping to make their name in Edmonton.

"How well the team performs will be down to how well individual members prepare in the next 17 days before the championships begin. But one thing is for sure- it will be exciting and new stars will be created."
