17 February 2001 - Bratislava, Slovakia – An historical first indoor match for Slovakia ended on Saturday in the new Elán hall (eight lanes straight, four lanes oval) with 4 national records for the hosts.

The best overall result was produced by a Slovak athlete. Olympic shot put finalist Milan Haborak confirmed his excellent shape. Already with his first attempt he produced 20.43 - a personal best (outdoors last year 20.35) putting him 6th in the World Indoor Lists 2001. He also produced 20.02 with his 3rd try.

"I’m still not peaking, so everything is planned for Lisbon. But the first try was not bad," commented Haborak.

In the end Hungary won by 3.5 points margin before Slovakia, with Slovenia in third place. The countries agreed that this new tradition should continue.

The best female result of the meet was achieved by Slovenia Silver medallist of European Indoor Championships 2000, Alenka Bikar as she ran 23.71 in the 200 m.

Slovak national records were produced in both relays, at 400m by Miriam Hrdlickova 54.69 and in the long jump by Aron Szmuda with 7.72. His coach is Michal Pogany (who also coaches the triple jump world champion Sarka Kasparkova, who is expecting a baby in June) and he bettered the 21-year-old record of Jaroslav Priscak (7.71 in 1980, he is now coach of some elite Czech athletes, for example hurdler Jiri Muzik).

This is only the second year that Elan Hall is in operation and on Saturday 9 new hall records were established.

In a specially contested 500m race for men (out of the match) Slovak Olympian Marcel Lopuchovsky ran a Slovak best with 1:03.29.
