German Karsten Kobs, world best of the season, headed the event from the first attempt with 80,24, and conquered his first great championship. As a sign of his happiness, he kissed the throwing circle after the competition and then he went for a dip into the steeplechase water jump. The rest of the medals were decided in the last attempts. The Hungarian Zsolt Nemeth reached the silver with his sixth throw 79,05 while the young Ukranian Vladislav Piskunov, only 21, took the bronze medal in the fifth round with 79,03. Reigning European champion Tibor Gecsek (HUN)who was one of the favourites, had a very irregular competition and ended very close to the podium (fourth in 78,95).

El aleman Karsten Kobs, mejor marca mundial de la temporada, lidero el concurso desde la primera tentativa con 80,24, conquistando su primer gran titulo. Como muestra de su alegria, el lanzador aleman beso el circulo de lanzamiento nada mas terminar la prueba y seguidamente se dio un bano en la ria de obstaculos. El resto de las medallas se decidieron en las ultimas tentativas, con el hungaro Zsolt Nemeth consiguiendo la plata en el sexto tiro con 79,05 mientras que el joven ucraniano Vladislav Piskunov, de solo 21 anos, se hacia con el bronce en el quinto tiro (79,03). Uno de los favoritos, el hungaro Tibor Gecsek, campeon de Europa en Budapest,realizo un concurso muy irregular quedandose a las puertas del podium (cuarto con 78,95.
