Haugland aims for Seville victory after injury

Norway's Hanne Haugland, the reigning women's world champion in the high jump looks set to miss the rest of '98 season following an accident whilst weight training.

Haugland was doing step-ups with 60kg of weights when she slipped, twisted an ankle and fell heavily. Subsequent scans showed hairline fractures of the fourth and fifth vertebrae of the neck. Although the fractures do not present any major risk and will heal completely in a relatively short period of time, they do mean that the 30-year-old Norwegian will be excluded from the high jump for most, if not all, of the 1998 season as a precautionary measure. She is currently able to train and has no pain from the injury.

With defence of her world champion's title in the 7th  IAAF World Championships in Seville '99 Haugland's main priority, she is not unduly worried by the injury and, although she will be unable to compete in her preferred event of the high jump, she is considering competing in the long jump - which does not involve the same risks of impact to the injured vertebrae - during the latter part of the season.
