9 April 2000 – Paris - Ethiopia’s Olympic and World champion Haile Gebrselassie, will compete for the first time this year in Hengelo on May 28, but he has yet to decide whether it will be over 3000m or 10,000m.

The announcement was made by Jos Hermens, the athlete’s manager and organiser of the Adriaan Paulen Memorial in the Netherlands.

"Haile is completely recovered from his right Achilles tendon injury (obtained just after the World Championships in Seville last year) but he has yet to decide whether to run the 3000m or 10,000m in Hengelo." Hermens was in Paris to follow the 2000 edition of the French capital’s marathon.

According to the manager, Gebreselassie is back training in Ethiopia having completed filming a commercial in Germany and Spain.

Other star athletes in Hengelo will include Kenyan Bernard Barmasai, 3000m steeplechase world record holder, and South Africa’s Hezekiel Sepeng, 800m World silver medallist.

"We will also attempt to break the women’s 5000m world record with Ethiopia’s

Gete Wami and Lydia Cheromei of Kenya", added Jos Hermens.

Wami and Cheromei finished second and fourth respectively in the women’s long course race (8km) at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Portugal last month.
