Howe makes comeback

FacebookTwitterEmail

Andrew Howe had a successful comeback from injury to win the 200 metres in 20.52 (iIalian seasonal best) at the International match Italy-France-Russia in a hot and humid evening in Viareggio, a seaside resort on the Italian riviera.

Howe, World Junior champion last year in Grosseto with a sensational European Junior record of 20.28, ran his second race of the season after being sidelined for most of the summer due to a biceps muscle injury which followed his 20.57 in his debut in Rieti on 6 May.

"This evening was too humid to run faster. Before the start I nervous. I expected to run 20.80 before the race. I miss competitions. Before the World Championships in Helsinki I would like to run a final test in the 200 metres, perhaps in Rieti", said Howe.

Assunta Legnante produced the best technical result of the evening with a good Italian seasonal best of 18.80 in the women shot put, which she backed up with two more results over the 18 metres barrier (18.06 and 18.29) and three long fouls. Legnante's 18.80 is just twelve centimetres off her Italian outdoor record of 18.92 she set in Nereto on 6 August 2004.

The 4x100 men relay (Luca Verdecchia, Simone Collio, Marco Torrieri and Koura Kaba Fantoni, european under 23 bronze medallist in Erfurt in the 200 metres and the 4x100) won unchallenged in 38.94, a result affected by unfavourable humid weather conditions.

The Italian 4x100 relay team may be a possible contender in the 4x100 final in Helsinki after its good second place in 38.69 in the European Cup in Florence behind Great Britain.
