The ninth edition of three day Junior Federation Cup athletics meet which concluded at the 35th battalion PAC stadium here at Lucknow on Sunday (26) night saw mixed fortunes for the upcoming athletes of India.
The meet, although intended for juniors (under-20) witnessed the participation of many enthusiastic youth (u-18) athletes. Delhi boy Arjun Kumar, fresh from his gold medal haul in the Discus Throw at the inaugural Asian Youth Games in Singapore, was once again in the limelight with a modest 50.99m throw to win his pet event here.
However, Javelin thrower Rohit Kumar could not carry on his success story as the young (16) athlete went down to another Delhi lad Arun Kumar (19) at Lucknow. Arun hurled the spear to 68.14m, which was slightly better than that of Rohit’s (67.56m).
While the Kumars battle-it-out for the top honours in throws, the spotlight of the meet focused on hurdlers who steal the show with splendid performances.
Tamil Nadu’s Govindaraj Gayathri once again snatched the attention of the spectators with her excellent showing in the Triple Jump and 100m Hurdles, the events wherein she had won two silver medals at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune. Having clocked a hand-timed 13.8 secs during the Indian Grand Prix at Chennai and registered 13.10m at her state championship in Coimbatore earlier this year, Gayathri was a cut above the rest in the junior field. At Lucknow she clocked a modest 14.23 to win the Hurdles and posted a meet mark 12.87m in triple jump, and obviously pocketed the ‘best athlete’ award.
Gayathri’s state-mate Kesavaramani, another uprising hurdler, put up an impressive showing by posting a new meet record in 110m Hurdles (14.43 secs) and adjudged as ‘best athlete’ among the junior men. Another Tamilnadu youngster Nikhil Chittarasu took the High Jump gold in 2.13m, which was however just 1cm short of his team mate Lakshmanan Yogaraj’s meet mark of 2.14m set at Pune last year.
In the fast improving junior women’s hammer throw, Seema Jakhar of Haryana win with 52.34m.
The state of Haryana once again dominated the scene with a tally of 8 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze medals, closely followed by Tamil Nadu (7-2-7).
