IAAF council to meet in Seville from 22-23 June: on the agenda the 7th World Championships in Athletics

Monte Carlo -19 June 1998 - The IAAF Council will hold a major meeting in Seville (Spain) from 22-23 June, presided by Dr Primo Nebiolo.

Seville will play host to the 7th IAAF World Championships in Athletics from 21-29 August 1999 and one of the major purposes behind the meeting in this Andalusian city will be to check the state of progress of the preparations for the World Championships and to take a number of important decisions concerning matters such as the timetable of events.

Council members will also visit the Olympic stadium in Seville, which is currently in construction and which will have a capacity of 60,000 spectators, all seated and under cover. The stadium is scheduled for completion by the end of March next year and the inauguration ceremony is set for 17 April 1999.

Council will also hear the report of the organisers of the first edition of the World Youth Championships (for athletes under 18 years of age), which will also take place next year, in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz.

The IAAF President will hold a press conference at the close of the Council session at 12.30pm on Tuesday 23 June. During the press conference, there will be held the draw of the 24 winners - 12 boys and 12 girls, representing the six IAAF Continental Areas - of the 1998 World Athletics Day competitions, which this year saw the record participation of 169 of the IAAF’s Member Federations. The 24 young athletes whose names are drawn will be invited to attend the 8th World Cup in Athletics in Johannesburg, in September, as guests of the IAAF.
