The IAAF has officially ratified the one hour world record established by Kenya's Tegla Loroupe in Borgholzhausen, Germany, on 7 August 1998.
Loroupe covered 18,340m to beat the previous mark of 18,084m set in 1981 by Italy’s Silvana Cruciata.
During the International Athletics Foundation’s World Athletics Gala ‘98, on Sunday 22 November, Loroupe received the foundation’s "Outstanding Performance Award" in recognition of her marathon world best performance of 2:20:47 in Rotterdam.
