IAAF Ratifies World Records
19 October, 1998 - Monaco - The IAAF has officially ratified the following world records:

The previous records were, respectively, 2:54.29, set by the USA team of Andrew Valmon, Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds and Michael Johnson, in Stuttgart at the 1993 world championships - 22 August 1993; 3:34.54 by Noah Ngeny (KEN) in Zürich on 13 August 1997. Ngeny had subsequently run 3:32.91 in Monaco on 16 August 1997, but the mark was not ratified due to lack of the requisite anti-doping test on the athlete.
