A convention between the Moroccan Youth and Sports Ministry, the Ministry for Higher National Education, Management training and Scientific Research, represented by Mrs Latifa El Abida, the Moroccan Royal Athletics Federation and the International Association of Athletics Federation was signed on 27 December at the headquarters of the Youth and Sports Ministry in Rabat.
The convention aims at promoting and developing the sport of athletics in schools through the strengthening of the technical and pedagogical staff, the steady improvement of facilities and the implementation of a pilot programme in primary schools.
The IAAF’s involvement includes the coaching of teachers, the supply of documents and equipment for the coaching sessions, 6 Kids’ Athletics’ kits and the regular assistance by IAAF experts.
IAAF President Lamine Diack said: “because it is accessible to the young people around the world, Athletics deserves to be the number one sport in schools. It was my dream ever since I was a young kid in Dakar, and this dream should be carried around the world.”
Lamine Diack joins Prince Moulay Rachid at 50th anniversary of Moroccan Sports Federation
A few days later, in the presence of Prince Moulay Rachid, heir to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, IAAF President Lamine Diack joined his colleague on the IAAF Council Nawal El Moutawakel, recently appointed sports minister of Morocco, at a special ceremony in Rabat on 29 December to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of Moroccan Sports Federation.
Labeled "Morocco: the land of champions", the event featured a mini-sport museum displaying postal stamps and photos, and a documentary that highlighted the best moments in Moroccan sporting history.
Lamine Diack reminded the guests that Morocco is now famous all over the world for being a country that loves sport, whether by organizing regional and world sports competitions, or through successful athletes on the international arena such as the legendary Hicham El Guerrouj.
Speaking on the occasion, Sports minister El Moutawakel said the event is an opportunity to connect with the past of national sports, foresee the future, and highlight the efforts carried out by all Moroccan sportsmen.
El Moutawakel also unveiled an action plan to develop national sports and improve their performance within a partnership with the private and public sectors, expressing hope that the authorities will be able to meet public expectations during the next Olympic Games in Beijing.

L’IAAF signe une convention scolaire avec le Maroc
Le ministère marocain de la Jeunesse et des Sports, celui de l’Enseignement Supérieur, de la Formation des Cadres et de la Recherche, représenté par Mme Larifa El Abida, et la Fédération royale d’athlétisme du Maroc ont signé une convention avec la Fédération internationale d’athlétisme, le 27 décembre à Rabat, au ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports.
Cette convention a pour but de promouvoir et développer l’athlétisme à l’école en renforçant les personnels techniques et pédagogiques, en améliorant de manière durable les installations et en mettant en œuvre un programme pilote dans les écoles primaires.
La contribution de l’IAAF comprend la formation des enseignants, la fourniture de documents et équipements pour les séances de formation, six kits Kids' Athletics ainsi qu’une assistance régulière fournie par des experts de l’IAAF.
"Dans la mesure où les jeunes du monde entier peuvent y accéder, l’athlétisme mérite le rang de sport numéro un à l’école, a déclaré Lamine Diack, le président de l’IAAF. Cela a toujours été mon rêve depuis ma plus tendre enfance à Dakar et ce rêve doit parcourir le monde."

Quelques jours plus tard, en présence du Prince Moulay Rachid, héritier du Roi Mohammed VI du Maroc, Lamine Diack, le président de l’IAAF, a rejoint Nawal El Moutawakel, sa collègue du Conseil de l’IAAF récemment nommée ministre des Sports du Maroc, à l’occasion d’une cérémonie commémorant le 50ème anniversaire de la première fédération sportive du Maroc.
Baptisée "Maroc, terre de champions", cette manifestation a présenté un mini-musée des sports regroupant timbres et photos ainsi qu’un documentaire mettant en lumière les meilleurs moments de l’histoire du sport marocain.
Lamine Diack a rappelé à ses hôtes que le Maroc avait acquis dans le monde entier une réputation de pays qui aime le sport, que ce soit par le biais de l’organisation de compétitions continentales et mondiales ou à travers les succès de ses athlètes sur la scène internationale, à l’image du légendaire Hicham El Guerrouj.
Dans son discours, Nawal El Moutawakel, la ministre des Sports, a souligné que cette cérémonie constituait une occasion de se connecter avec le passé sportif du pays, d’anticiper sur l’avenir et de souligner les efforts accomplis par tous les sportifs marocains.
La ministre a également dévoilé un plan d’action pour développer le sport national et améliorer ses performances grâce à un partenariat avec les secteurs publics et privés. Elle a enfin exprimé le souhait que les pouvoirs publics puissent répondre aux attentes du public lors des prochains Jeux olympiques de Beijing.
