IAAF World Championships bidding teams arrive in Mombasa

The delegations representing the four cities that are still in the running for hosting either the 2011 or 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics have arrived in the coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya where the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships concluded yesterday.

Following the traditional IAAF Council meeting which takes place today and tomorrow here in Mombasa, an extra day - Tuesday 27 March - has been dedicated to the selection of the host cities for two editions of the most important competition on the IAAF Calendar.

Each delegation will have 40 minutes to present their most convincing arguments to the 25 voting members of the IAAF Council (3 members are absent) followed by a 20-minute question and answer session.

At the opening of the IAAF Council Meeting this morning, President Lamine Diack selected the order of the presentation drawing at random the names of the cities.

Final order for Tuesday’s presentations:

09:20   Barcelona, Spain - bidding for 2013 only

10:20   Brisbane, Australia - bidding for 2011& 2013

11:20   Moscow, Russia - bidding for 2011& 2013

12:20   Daegu, South Korea - bidding for 2011& 2013


The 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics will be held in Osaka, Japan in 2007, and the 12th edition of the championships will be hosted by Berlin, Germany in 2009.
