Phillips Idowu will no doubt be hoping that his second experience of a Samsung Diamond League event – at the Aviva British Grand Prix in Gateshead tomorrow (10) – will be easier on his spirit than the first.

Britain’s World champion produced a highly respectable effort of 17.31m at the meeting in New York’s Icahn Stadium on 6 June. Sweden’s former Olympic and World champion Christian Olsson also had something to be pleased with as he managed a wind-assisted effort of 17.62.

And both were blown away by the 17.98m recorded by France’s 20-year-old upstart Teddy Tamgho, who thus became the third longest jumper of all-time behind Kenny Harrison, the US winner of the 1996 Olympic title, and Britain’s Jonathan Edwards, whose 1995 World record of 18.29m still stands.
