Alaguvel Aravind and Poonam Tomar were fastest sprinters with the timings of 10.49 and 11.81 respectively for the men's and womne's 100m at the third day of Indian Inter-State Championships in Chennai, India, today.

Kerala’s Joseph Abraham bettered the national record in the men’s 400m Hurdles clocking 50.22.  He bettered the previous mark of 50.39 set by Patlavath Shankar during the Asian Grand Prix at Bangalore on 22 May, this year.

The biggest upset came in the men’s Long Jump where the local lad Wayne Peppin had the better of the more fancied Shivshankar Yadav, who had joined the 8m club recently with a mark of 8.01m (Forli, Italy, 1 October 2006). Peppin jumped 7.68m to clinch the title by one centimetre from Yadav (7.67m).

In women’s 400m, Pinki Pramanik’s golden run continues as she pushed the Asian champion Manjit Kaur to second spot. Pinki clocked a modest 53.06 for the win. In the men’s race Aboo Backer did the same with the favourite Bhupinder Singh. Backer won with 47.21.

V.S. Surekha improved the meet mark to 3.90m in the women's Pole Vault but she failed at the Asian Games qualifying height of 4.10m.
