Injured Thomas eyes end of year return
12 July 1999 - London -(AFP) - British 400 metre runner Iwan Thomas on Monday shrugged aside his disappointment at missing next month's World Championships and looked ahead to making his return towards the end of the year.

Thomas, the 1998 European, Commonwealth and World Cup champion, underwent surgery last week on a stress fracture of the ankle picked up while training in South Africa earlier this season.

He will miss the World Championships in Seville, Spain, from August 20-29 but remains in high spirits.

"The doctors looked after me extremely well and I'm glad the operation was a success," said Thomas, who should be fit enough to return to full training in six to eight weeks. "The ankle is still sore but it's improving day by day and I can't wait to get back on the track in the autumn."
