World Athlete of the Year, Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, the Olympic champion, twice broke the women's World Pole Vault record tonight in London's Crystal Palace stadium at the "Norwich Union London Grand Prix" - IAAF Super Grand Prix - meet, first with 4.96m, and in the last few minutes the landmark of 5 metres**.

The Russian, the IAAF Overall World Ranked number one, had held the previous World record at 4.95m.

Isinbayeva -

“It was my dream to be the first woman over 5m, I can’t explain my feelings. I love the run-up and the stadium here. The weather was good and the crowd was great. I don’t know how much higher I can go, may be 5.05m.”

Sergey Bubka (IAAF Council Member and current World record holder for the men’s event) -

“I think she is unique, she jumps records like I did in my time. She jumped 5m which is something special. I think she can jump higher. I want her to beat my record (of the number of World records).”
