World 10,000m champion Charles Kamathi received a rousing welcome after finishing second in the second heat of the men's 5000m, as the Kenyan National Championships started at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in the capital Nairobi today.

Kamathi's participation at the Kenyan championships had been in doubt after he skipped the Kenyan Police Championships and reports had indicated he would be disqualified from the Nationals.

But the World champion ran a great race in the second heat in which he timed 13:35.0 behind Commonwealth Games champion Sammy Kipketer, who won in 13:34.6. Philip Kirui was third in 13:36.0.

"I am in good shape and I will certainly make the team to (the World Championships) Paris," said Kamathi. "I am getting there. This is to gain speed work for the 10,000m. I am sure it will work because my body is beginning to respond positively now."

Commonwealth Games and African Championships silver medallist Benjamin Limo won the first heat in 13:50.0 with Robert Chebobor second in 13:50.3 and African Championships 10,000m bronze medalist Benjamin Maiyo third in 13:50.5.

The championships' start was marked by chilly Nairobi July weather that threatened going sub:10 degrees.

Isaac Songok, who won the 1500m at the World Youth Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, two years ago, was among the qualifiers for the men's 1500m final after winning the second heat in 3:44.4. He beat James Ngeemi (3:44.6) and Gideon Githimba (3:45.8) to second and third places respectively.

Armed Forces champion Robert Rono won the first heat in 3:48.1, and David Kiplak won the third heat in 3:47.0. Olympic champion Noah Ngeny did not take part.

Naomi Mugo won the women's 1500m first heat in 4:21.2, beating Jackline Maranga to second position in 4:21.5 and Caroline Kwambai third in 4:22.1.

Margaret Ngotho won the second heat in 4:21.7, as Mary Wangare came second in 4:22.0 and world junior champion Viola Kibiwott third in 4:22.1.
