7 October 2001 – St Paul, Minnesota -
Joshua Kipkemboi of Kenya and Zinaida
Semenova of Russia won the men's and
women's divisions of the Twin Cities
Marathon.
The 42-year-old Kipkemboi finished in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 7 seconds. He was third last year.
“I started to test (the pack) to see if they were strong,” Kipkemboi said. “I saw that they weren't as strong as me, so I went ahead of them.”
Semenova, 38, was timed in 2:26:51 in winning this race for the third time, following victories in 1998 and 2000.
The temperature was about freezing at the beginning of the race at 8 a.m., and Semenova found it to her liking.
“The cold seems to agree with me,” Semenova said. “It's like home.”
The runners-up were Sergei Fedotov in 2:14:14 and Olga Kovpotina in 2:27:37.
More than 8,500 runners started the race near the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.
