Bernard Lagat's younger brother Nathan lit up the Moi Kasarani Stadium with a blistering home-stretch sprint in the 5000m during the Kenya Universities Athletics Championships on Saturday (12 June).

The younger Lagat, an IT student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, which the 2000 Sydney Olympics bronze medallist also attended before proceeding to Washington State University, won the race in 14:01.7, with Michael Njoroge, also of Jomo Kenyatta, following in 14:15.6 and John Maina of Kenyatta University third in 14:59.7.

Another outstanding performance was recorded in the 1500m in which Titus Koech of Egerton University won in 3:47.5, a new universities record. He erased Bernard Lagat's 3:48.0, which he set in 1996.
