Kenya's Kipsos wins
Rome marathon; Cocchetti takes women's title

24 March 2002 - Kenya's Vincent Kipsos won the Rome marathon Sunday, beating countryman Steven Matebo by more than a minute in the eighth edition of the race in the Italian capital.
Kipsos, recording a personal best time, finished the 42.2 kilometre race in 2h9:30. Matebo was the runner-up, finishing 1minute, 9 seconds back, followed by Ethiopia's Moges Taye with a time of 2:11:08.
Italy's Maria Cocchetti won the women's event in a time of 2:33:06, beating Ethiopian Gadisse Edato (2:33:36) and Belgian Sandra Van den Haesevelde (2:35:30).
The event, run under partly cloudy skies on a blustery day, drew some 40,000 entrants from 27 different countries. The race started and finished next to the Colosseum.
