Kipketer breaks 1000m World Indoor Record

6 February 2000 – Stuttgart, Germany - Dane Wilson Kipketer issued an early Olympic warning as he broke the 1000m World Indoor Record in 2:15.25 on Sunday.

The three-time 800m World Outdoor Champion, who has yet to win an Olympic gold over the distance, bettered the old mark by one hundredth of a second. The previous best of 2:15.26 was set by Algerian Noureddine Morceli in February 1992 in Birmingham.

Kenyan-born Kipketer, who holds the 800m World Outdoor Record, has lost only six races since 1994, most of them when he was recovering from malaria.

"I am surprised because after a groin injury before Christmas I only started training properly in January,'' said Kipketer, who was on record pace from the start of the race.

Kipketer sprinted away from the pack on the final lap and ran with Kenya's Kennedy Kimwetich on his shoulder until pulling away during the final yards. Kimwetich was timed in 2:15.50. Kipketer first thought he had only equalled the World Record as the Stuttgart stadium's board showed 2:15.26. But the time was then corrected to 2:15.25.

Kipketer's 1000 was one of four year's best marks produced at the meet with Ethiopian Million Wolde running a 7:35.84 in the 3000m and countrywoman Hailu Mekonnen 3:35.58 in the 1500m.

Sevatheda Fynes of the Bahamas also collected a year's best of 7.04 in the women's 60m and Germany's Stefan Holz by winning the 400m in 46.08.

Britain's Jason Gardner, a protege of former Olympic Champion Linford Christie, took control of the men's 60 meters halfway through the race to win in 6.49 and edge Cuba's Freddy Majola by 0.03 seconds.

Romania's Gabriela Szabo, the women's 5000m World Champion, captured the mile in 4:23.90 and Tony Dees of the United States took the 60m hurdles in 7.50.

Maria Mutola of Mozambique turned in a sub-par 2:01.18 in the women's 800m and Germany's Astrid Kumbernuss, the Olympic Champion, also won the shot put with a mediocre toss of 19.16m

Canada's Donovan Bailey, the 100m Olympic gold medallist trying to come back from an injury, pulled out of the 60m with a muscle injury.
