Under an overcast sky but on a warm and windy day Kenyan born Dutchwoman Lornah Kiplagat won the 22nd Dam to Dam race from Amsterdam to Zaandam in 50:50 bettering her world’s fastest ever clocking (22 Sep 2002) by four seconds.

Francis Kibiwott was the men’s winner. The Kenyan who was running his first race since October last year out sprinted Tanzanian World Half Marathon champion Fabian Joseph by two seconds clocking a winning time of 45:27, the fastest time of the year for the 10 Miles distance. Another Kenyan Francis Kiprop came home third in 45:55.

Women

Lornah Kiplagat was in a class of her own. She lost her last opponent, Latvian Jelena Prokopcuka already after two kilometres.

“I never expected to better my world best time,” Kiplagat said after the race. “The third five kilometres were rather windy but my first goal was not to be overtaken by the men. The whole race I was feeling well and I could run the last two kilometres in 3:13 and 3:15. This race is giving me a good feeling for the World Championship 20 kms at Debrecen on 8 October. Tomorrow I go to Kenya to prepare for this race. I will not train too hard and hope to keep this form.''

Prokopcuka ran a personal best of 51:57 for second place.

“Lornah Kiplagat was far to strong for me, I could follow her for the first two kilometres. I'm happy with my personal best. I will now prepare for the New York Marathon, I'm happy this race went well.''

Ethiopian Bizunesh Bekele finished third in 52:00.

Men

In the men’s race a group of ten passed the first 5km marker in 14:18 but after ten kilometres there were just three leaders left: Kibiwott, Joseph and Kiprop. In a rather strong headwind Kiprop lost contact and Kibiwott and Joseph, passed 15kms in 42:32 with Kiprop 15 seconds back. In the Peperstreet, lined with thousand of spectators, Kibiwott proved to have the fastest sprint.

Over 20.000 took part in several races today.
