Defending champion Lornah Kiplagat (NED) and fellow Jelena Prokopcuka (LAT) and Benita Johnson (AUS), the top three finishers at the 2005 Circle of Friends New York Mini 10K, will return for the 35th running of the race on Saturday, 10 June 2006.

Kiplagat, 32, of the Netherlands, holds two of the six fastest times ever run on the Mini course. She is back to try for her third Mini title after winning the 2005 race in a time of 31:44. If she wins again this year, Kiplagat will move to number three on the all-time list of athletes with multiple Mini titles, behind running legends Grete Waitz and Tegla Loroupe, who have five wins each.

Kiplagat has had great success in New York, with four top-10 finishes in the ING New York City Marathon. She was a silver medallist this year at the long race at the World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

“I am excited to return to New York City to try for my third win in the Circle of Friends New York Mini 10K,” said Kiplagat. “The crowds in Central Park are always very enthusiastic for this race and there is no doubt that we are bringing them one of the strongest fields ever.”

Prokopcuka, 29, of Latvia, the 2005 New York Marathon champion who came second in Boston in April, and Johnson, 27, of Australia, the 2004 World Cross Country long race champion and was fourth at both the long and short races this year will challenge Kiplagat along with strong American contenders Amy Rudolph, Jen Rhines, Kate O’Neill, Magdalena Lewy-Boulet, and Nicole Aish.
