Kumbernuss and Kiss in the limelight in Cottbus
Ed Gordon for the IAAF
18 July 2001 - Cottbus, Germany - Even before many of the spectators had arrived at the Cottbus Sportzentrum, 1996 Olympic hammer champion Balazs Kiss had posted a truly international-level mark with 81.36. For the Hungarian, it was the best throw since 1998, and it moved him into the number six position this season, of which Hungary claims three.

"I’ve had a problem lately with a torn ligament in my neck," Kiss explained. "I knew I had a good mark when I released the hammer, but I wish I could have had other good marks in the series today."

Kiss already was assured a place on the Hungarian team for Edmonton, but he wishes he could have a little more preparation time.

"I’m still not strong enough to do my good technique. What you saw today was accomplished using my ‘weak’ technique."

Another Atlanta champion also scored a win. German shotputter Astrid Kumbernuss’ 19.58 easily was the class of the competition over Poland’s Katarzyna Zakowicz (18.06).

A more recently crowned Olympic champion—Sydney pole vault winner Nick Hysong—was able to conquer a strong German contingent with a 5.75 jump. European under-23 champion Lars Boergeling was second, and current German champion Richard Spiegelburg placed third, both with 5.70.
